In a significant step toward advancing research and development in Nigeria, the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has entered into a strategic collaboration with the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC). The partnership, formalized on April 9, 2025, through a Letter of Cooperation, aims to commercialize innovative research initiatives and foster economic growth within the state and beyond.
Under the agreement, the University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Linkage, and Collaboration, Professor Peter C. Okafor, has assigned a dedicated desk officer to facilitate seamless coordination between UNICAL and RMRDC. This move underscores the institution’s commitment to leveraging its robust research capabilities alongside RMRDC’s expertise in raw materials development.
Speaking on the collaboration, Professor Okafor emphasized its transformative potential, stating that the partnership would catalyze innovation and industrial progress. By combining the university’s academic and research strengths with RMRDC’s specialized focus on raw materials, the initiative is expected to unlock new opportunities for technological advancement and sustainable economic development.
The Acting State Coordinator of RMRDC, Mr. Obot A.Eteng., expressed gratitude to the University’s leadership for embracing the collaboration. He highlighted the shared vision between the two institutions, noting that RMRDC’s Director General, Professor Nnanyelugo Martin Ike-Muonso, is fully committed to advancing the Council’s mission of promoting industrial growth through the development of local raw materials.
This landmark partnership is poised to strengthen the nation’s research ecosystem, bridge the gap between academia and industry, and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s industrialization agenda. Both parties have pledged to work closely to ensure the successful implementation of joint projects under this initiative.
As the collaboration unfolds, stakeholders anticipate groundbreaking outcomes that will not only benefit Cross River State but also position Nigeria as a hub for innovation and industrial excellence.
