Circular Economy: Business Opportunities in Nigeria
For the circular economy to gain traction in Nigeria, it’s not enough to focus solely on environmental benefits- there must be a clear and compelling business case to drive its adoption.
Here are a few reasons why the circular economy can be good business in Nigeria:
1. Cost Savings and Efficiency: One of the major benefits of circular business models is the potential for significant cost reductions. By reusing, repairing, and recycling materials, companies can minimize the cost of raw materials and waste disposal. In a country like Nigeria, where the cost of importing materials is high due to currency fluctuations and supply chain disruptions, a circular approach can offer substantial financial relief.
2. Job Creation: The circular economy presents opportunities for new businesses and jobs, particularly in sectors like waste management, recycling, refurbishment, and remanufacturing. Nigeria’s unemployment rate is high, and a circular economy could help create much-needed jobs, especially for the youth.
3. Supply Chain Resilience: Circular business models reduce reliance on global supply chains. Nigeria’s economy has faced disruptions from global events like the COVID-19 pandemic. By focusing on local material recovery and reuse, companies can build more resilient supply chains and be less vulnerable to external shocks. The Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) needs to support the concept of the supply chain resilience as the agency is Nigeria’s focal point for the development and utilization of the nation’s vast industrial raw materials resources. This will facilitate the establishment of new resource-based industries which in turn will provide new job opportunities and contribute to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
4. Innovation and New Markets: The circular economy fosters innovation by encouraging businesses to find creative ways to extend product life, improve resource efficiency, and deliver services rather than products. This could open new markets for Nigerian entrepreneurs in areas such as green technology, product design, and sustainable packaging.
5. Consumer Demand: There is a growing awareness of sustainability among Nigerian consumers, especially within the middle class and urban youth. Brands that adopt circular practices, such as recycling programs, eco-friendly packaging, and take-back schemes, can differentiate themselves and attract environmentally conscious consumers.
6. Compliance with Global Standards: As international markets increasingly emphasize sustainability, Nigerian companies adopting circular practices will be better positioned to meet export standards and gain access to global markets. This can enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness on the global stage, particularly as developed nations tighten environmental regulations.
7. Government Incentives and Policies: The Nigerian government has shown interest in environmental sustainability through policies like the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program. Businesses that adopt circular economy models may be eligible for tax incentives, grants, or other government support.
8. Energy and Resource Scarcity: Given Nigeria’s challenges with electricity, water, and other resources, the circular economy can help businesses optimize resource use. Companies that reduce energy or water consumption by reusing resources or improving efficiency can gain a competitive edge in a country where utilities are often costly and unreliable.
For the circular economy to truly take off in Nigeria, businesses must recognize the potential for profit alongside environmental benefits. By positioning the circular economy as a smart business strategy, companies cannot only contribute to sustainability but also build more resilient, innovative, and competitive enterprises.
