The Circular Future with Your Eco Girl! | By Dr. Inyene Nkanta | University of the West of Scotland
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a thought provoking webinar hosted by the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC). The discussions were both inspiring and eye opening, igniting a renewed sense of curiosity in me. Let me state here, for the purpose of this article, I will be making reference more to cassava as I believe that cassava is more than just being a staple food in Nigeria which many Nigerians may not be aware of.
Nigeria is a nation blessed with abundant natural resources, yet our ability to harness these resources for sustainable development remains a challenge. Recently, during a webinar organized by the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), this issue was brought forward. The discussion not only sparked my curiosity but also deepened my appreciation for the untapped potential of our resources, particularly cassava.
Cassava is one of Nigeria’s most versatile and valuable crops. It is not just a staple food; it is a key agricultural resource with a wide range of industrial applications. From its roots, we can derive products such as flour, starch, sweeteners, ethanol, and even biodegradable plastics. Its by-products can be used in animal feed, pharmaceuticals, and adhesives. Despite its potential, Nigeria has not fully leveraged cassava as a driver of economic diversification and industrial development.
Cassava: The Untapped Goldmine
Nigeria is one of the largest producer of cassava in the world, yet much of what is cultivated is consumed locally as food. The nation has not invested adequately in the value chain that transforms cassava into industrial and export-ready products. For instance:
- Cassava Starch: This is in high demand globally, particularly in industries like textiles, paper, and adhesives.
- Ethanol: Cassava can be processed into bioethanol, a renewable energy source that could reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported fossil fuels.
- Cassava Flour: As a gluten-free alternative, it has a growing market in health-conscious and industrial baking sectors.
Despite these opportunities, inefficiencies in production, lack of infrastructure, poor research and development, and limited access to markets have kept Nigeria from fully unlocking cassava’s potential.
The Way Forward: Efficient Resource Utilization
To harness the potential of cassava and other natural resources, Nigeria must adopt a strategic approach:
- Investment in Research and Development: Government and private sector funding for research into cassava processing technologies and product diversification is critical.
- Infrastructure Development: Building processing plants, improving transportation networks, and ensuring steady power supply will enable cassava’s transformation into value-added products.
- Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs): Encouraging collaboration between government and businesses can attract investments, enhance capacity, and create job opportunities across the cassava value chain.
- Capacity Building: Farmers and entrepreneurs need training in modern farming techniques, sustainable practices, and efficient processing methods to improve yield and product quality.
- Export Promotion: Establishing policies and incentives to support the export of processed cassava products will increase Nigeria’s presence in the global market.
A National Imperative
The case of cassava underscores the broader challenge facing Nigeria’s resource management. Possessing natural resources is not enough; efficiently utilizing them to create wealth and drive industrialization is what truly matters. Cassava, with its versatility and market potential, offers a blueprint for how Nigeria can transition from a raw material exporter to a hub of industrial production and innovation.
The RMRDC webinar served as a powerful reminder that the time to act is now. Cassava and other resources must be seen not just as agricultural produce but as cornerstones of Nigeria’s economic transformation. By harnessing our natural resources effectively, we can pave the way for sustainable growth, reduce poverty, and secure a prosperous future for generations to come.
Let us seize this opportunity to turn our blessings into tangible benefits and unlock the true potential of Nigeria’s natural wealth.
