Experts at a one-day workshop on bio-organic agriculture, organized by the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike’s College of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (CNCREM) in collaboration with Resol Switzerland have advocated for Bio-organic agriculture to enhance food security in Nigeria.
During the keynote address, the Head of Research and Development Resol, Switzerland, Mr. Petrus Jakobus Snyman, emphasized the importance of a healthy ecosystem for the well-being of plants, livestock, and humans.

He highlighted bio-organic agriculture as an internationally recognized system that mitigates the problems associated with synthetic fertilizers, maximizes soil fertility, and produces healthy and tasty food.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Prof. Maduebisi Ofo Iwe, highlighted the importance of the workshop in addressing the challenges facing food production in Nigeria.
He stressed the need for bio-organic agricultural practices to eliminate the use of chemicals, prevent pests and diseases, and increase food security while maintaining the health of humans, animals, plants, and soil fertility.
Dr. Eberechi Cecilia Osuagwu, Coordinator of the Bio-Organic Innovation Project, noted that the numerous benefits of bio-organic agriculture, motivated the organizing of the workshop with theme “Bio-Organic Agricultural Innovation: A Roadmap to National Food Bio-Security, Ecosystem Restoration and Economic Stability.”
In her goodwill message, the Abia State Coordinator of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Dr. Oji-Nnorom briefed participants on the mandate of the Council which is to promote the development and optimal utilization of the nation’s raw materials resources for industrial growth. She expressed the Council’s commitment to collaboration and research in bio-organic agriculture.
