In a strategic move to enhance food security and promote sustainable agriculture in the South-South region of Nigeria, the Rivers State Coordinator, Mrs. G.O. Agbaim, led a team on a visit to Jovin Farms on Wednesday, August 14th, 2024. The farm, located at Lane 3, Rivers State Housing Estate, Ozuboko, Port Harcourt, is renowned for its innovative approach to greenhouse farming, which includes the cultivation of tomatoes, peppers, and various vegetables.
The South-South region of Nigeria, traditionally not known for large-scale tomato and pepper production, is now exploring greenhouse farming as a viable alternative. Mrs. Agbaim introduced the purpose of the visit: to initiate the formation of greenhouse farming clusters specifically for tomatoes and pepper production. This initiative aims to boost industrial growth, increase food security, create jobs for restive youths, and reduce poverty in the region.

Jovin Farms, owned by Mrs. Vivian Segun John—a microbiologist, entrepreneur, and dedicated farmer—exemplifies the potential of greenhouse farming. The farm utilizes well-treated topsoil arranged in bags to cultivate a variety of crops, including tomatoes, peppers, and other vegetables. This method not only conserves resources but also enhances the quality and yield of the produce.
During the visit, Mrs. Agbaim proposed the formation of a greenhouse farming cluster in Rivers State, bringing together 10-15 farmers. This cluster would serve as a training ground for youths and women, equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in greenhouse farming. The Managing Director of Jovin Farms, Mrs. Segun John, warmly welcomed the idea and expressed her willingness to collaborate, requesting to be informed once the plans for the cluster are finalized.
This initiative marks a significant step towards transforming agriculture in the South-South region, providing new opportunities for economic growth and development while addressing the pressing need for food security in Nigeria.
