Marie Melnisky presented the benefits of regenerative agriculture to RMRDC in the state office Jos Plateau State, highlighting its cost-effectiveness, improved soil fertility, increased biodiversity, and climate change mitigation. She emphasized the need to protect the soil biome, avoid agro-chemicals, and adopt practices like cover crops, minimum tillage, crop rotations, mixed farming, agroforestry, and organic fertilizers. Maria stated,” conventional farming practices have degraded the soils, depleted resources, and harmed ecosystem. Regenerative agriculture offers a solution, promoting soil health, biodiversity and ecosystem services”.
The partnership will involve training, workshops, and field demonstrations to enlighten farmers on regenerative agriculture. Both parties have agreed to work together to develop modalities for implementing regenerative agriculture practices in Plateau State.
The state coordinator,Dr.Peter Adegege said the initiative is expected to enhance agricultural production, promote sustainability, and support long-term food security in the region. He expressed his excitement that the partnership with Melnisky will bring regenerative agriculture to the forefront of Nigeria’s farming practices.
