As Nigeria grapples with the challenges of economic growth and development, it is becoming increasingly clear that the key to unlocking the Country’s full potential lies in the development of its raw materials sector. RMRDC has been at the forefront of this effort, and its initiatives are beginning to yield positive results.

Africa Raw Materials Summit 2025
Under Prof. Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso’s visionary leadership, the Councll is setting a transformative trajectory for Nigeria’s economic sustainability by harnessing the nation’s abundant raw materials. The initiative is paving the way for industrial growth, reduced import dependency, and a thriving, self-reliant economy.
Some significant achievements made include the following:
Proposed 30% value addition to Nigeria’s Raw Materials
One of RMRDC’s remarkable strides is the ongoing process to achieve a 30% value addition to Nigeria’s raw materials. This initiative shall directly address the chronic export of unprocessed raw materials, which limits revenue generation and jobs creation. By promoting local processing and industrial utilisation, RMRDC is adding significant value to raw materials, thereby boosting the nation’s GDP and creating a chain of economic activities. This strategy shall not only fosters industrial growth but also strengthen Nigeria’s global competitive advantage in value-added exports.
Robust Raw Materials Information System (RMIS)
The development of a robust Raw Materials Information System (RMIS) data base is another landmark achievement. This system will be fully launched in the early part of the year 2025 to provide comprehensive data on the availability, location, and industrial potential of raw materials in Nigeria. With such a database, investors and manufacturers can make informed decisions, while policymakers can craft strategies to harness untapped resources. By bridging the information gap, the RMIS positions Nigeria as a reliable hub for industrial raw materials.
Re-strategizing to Build Trust
Trust is a critical currency in fostering collaboration between public institutions and the private sector. Prof. Ike-Muonso’s leadership has seen the RMRDC re-strategize its operations to build transparency, efficiency, and accountability. By prioritizing stakeholder engagement and delivering on its promises, the Council is winning the confidence of investors, manufacturers, and international partners, ensuring long-term collaboration for industrial development.
Investing in Human Capital Development
Economic transformation cannot occur without a skilled workforce. RMRDC’s emphasis on human capital development is a game-changer. This has led to the establishment of the RMRDC Training School, with a focus on capacity-building programs, trainings, and partnerships with educational institutions. Through this programme, the Council is equipping Nigerians with the technical and managerial skills needed for the raw materials and manufacturing sectors. This attention to human capital development ensures that the nation has the expertise to maximize its natural resources effectively.
Strategic Partnerships with Stakeholders
RMRDC’s success also lies in its ability to forge strategic partnerships with stakeholders across various sectors. From manufacturing to research institutions and international organizations, these partnerships are fostering innovation, technology transfer, and investment. Collaborations like these amplify the impact of raw materials development efforts, ensuring that every segment of the value chain is optimized for growth and sustainability.
The Raw Materials Demonstration Plant of the Council: This serves as a practical platform to promote the development, utilization, and commercialization of Nigeria’s abundant raw materials. These plants are pivotal for advancing raw materials development in several ways:
- Demonstrating Viable Technologies: The plants showcase innovative and efficient technologies for processing local raw materials. Entrepreneurs, researchers, and investors can witness the feasibility of these technologies, thereby encouraging adoption.
- Facilitating Value Addition: For example, processing agricultural produce like cassava into industrial starch, etc
- Stimulating Industrialization: By demonstrating the potential utilization of locally available resources, the plants encourage local industries to source raw materials within Nigeria. This drives industrial diversification and economic growth.
- Enhancing Collaborations: They act as a bridge between research institutes, industries, and government bodies, ensuring that research outputs are applied practically.
RMRDC has developed Pilot Plants for Agro-Industrial Processing for crops like cassava, sugarcane, sesame, etc and also Mineral Processing Demonstrations for minerals like kaolin, gypsum, etc into industrial-grade materials.
Nigeria’s path to a booming and sustainable economy lies in its ability to leverage its vast raw material resources. Under Prof. Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso’s dynamic leadership, the RMRDC is not only championing this cause but also redefining the nation’s economic potential. Through value addition, innovative information systems, trust-building, human capital investment, and strategic partnerships, the Council is proving that raw materials development is indeed the way to go.
As the RMRDC continues its journey, Nigerians can look forward to a future where the economy is resilient, self-sufficient, and globally competitive. Prof. Ike-Muonso’s leadership is a testament to the power of vision, strategy, and collaboration in driving sustainable development.
