The Federal Ministry of Finance, in collaboration with key stakeholders including the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), on Thursday held a one-day nationwide sensitization programme on the implementation of the whistleblowing policy in Calabar.
The programme, themed “Assessment of Whistleblowing Policy Implementation in Nigeria: The Journey So Far,” took place at Teny Homes Hall and brought together representatives of government agencies, security institutions, and other stakeholders.
Declaring the event open, the Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Edet Otu, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony Uwaeno, welcomed participants and commended the Ministry for promoting public awareness of the whistleblowing policy as a vital tool for strengthening transparency and accountability. He urged stakeholders to actively support the initiative.
Also speaking, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Bello Rasheed Afegbua, who represented the Inspector-General of Police, reaffirmed the commitment of security agencies to protecting whistleblowers and ensuring the effective implementation of the policy.
In his keynote address, the Director-General of Finance, represented by Dan Danki, stated that the nationwide sensitization programme was designed to deepen public understanding of the whistleblowing policy and enhance collaboration among enforcement agencies.
Technical sessions were delivered by the Head of Whistleblowing Policy, Oludare Johnson, alongside representatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC). Presentations focused on the progress made in implementing the policy, its role in combating corruption, and the need to safeguard informants.
The programme also provided an opportunity for the Cross River State Coordinator of RMRDC, Mr. Eteng Anozeng Obot, to emphasize the importance of strengthening institutional commitment to transparency and accountability as essential drivers of industrial development and sustainable management of Nigeria’s raw material resources.
The event recorded the participation of several sister agencies, with organizers noting that the sensitization campaign will continue across other states of the federation.
