The Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) Osun State Coordinating Office has identified potential talc deposits in two locations within the state, signalling a significant opportunity for the region’s industrial development.

A team from RMRDC, led by State Coordinator Mr Adeyemi Adenrele Saheed, conducted a field visit between March 20th and 22nd to investigate reported talc occurrences. The team, comprising Mr. Olu-ojo B.M. and Engr. Adams O.O., accompanied by local artisan miner Mr Kareem, visited Papa village in Iwo Local Government Area and Ota Efun village in Olorunda Local Government Area.
During the visit, the team observed visible talc outcrops, confirming the presence of mineralization in both locations. Papa village, approximately 45 kilometres from both Ibadan and Osogbo and Ota Efun, within the Osogbo capital region, is characterized by a mix of agricultural and artisanal activities. The geological formations, including schists and granite, are known to host minerals like talc, which is formed through the alteration of magnesium-rich rocks.
“The discovery of these talc deposits presents a significant opportunity for Osun State,” stated Mr Adeyemi S.A. “Talc has numerous industrial applications, and its local exploitation could boost our economy and create jobs.”

While no active mining was observed in Papa village, the team learned of potential private sector interest. In Ota Efun, limited small-scale mining had occurred previously, but miners were currently focused on seasonal agriculture. Residents in both areas displayed a lack of awareness regarding the economic potential of talc.
Samples were collected from the following locations:
- Papa Village, Iwo:
- Rock sample 1: Latitude 7° 33′ 34.11″ N, Longitude 4° 7′ 33.54″ E
- Rock sample 2: Latitude 7° 33′ 35.74″ N, Longitude 4° 7′ 31″ E
- Ota Efun, Olorunda:
- Rock sample 3: Latitude 7° 47′ 34.56″ N, Longitude 4° 31′ 34.68″ E
- Rock sample 4: Latitude 7° 44′ 18.26″ N, Longitude 4° 32′ 0.68″ E
RMRDC recommends further geological surveys and feasibility studies to assess the commercial viability and quality of these deposits. The council also suggests collaboration with the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) for detailed exploration, including geochemical and geophysical assessments.

Furthermore, the team highlighted the presence of other strategic minerals in Osun State, including gold, tin, lead-zinc, kaolin, feldspar, granite, and limestone. RMRDC advocates prioritizing research and investment in these minerals to diversify Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
“We urge for public-private partnerships and community engagement to ensure sustainable mining practices,” Mr. Adeyemi emphasized. “Improved cooperation between agencies like NGSA and the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development is crucial for streamlined mineral exploration and exploitation.”
RMRDC also calls for government policies that facilitate ease of licensing and provide incentives for local mineral development, aiming to unlock the full potential of Osun State’s mineral resources.
