In a bid to tackle the growing pandemic of skin bleaching in Nigeria, the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) in partnership with Tropics Derma Research and Training Institute (TDRTI), has launched a 10-day exercise in Bauchi State to collect and analyze skin samples from individuals with various skin conditions.
The initiative aims to develop science-based skin care solutions tailored to African skin types, addressing serious health issues associated with skin bleaching was carried by the Bauchi State Coordinating office of RMRDC led by the State Coordinator Mr. Turaki Wambai.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a staggering 77% of people in Nigeria use skin whitening products, highlighting the need for urgent action. The exercise, conducted across various institutes in Bauchi State, including the College of Agriculture, Local Government Pension Board, and Government Girls College, among others, seeks to gather data that will inform the formulation of safe and effective skin care products.
The project expected to utilize indigenous raw materials such as baobab, promoting their use and boosting economic activities in Nigeria. By developing skin care products that cater to African skin types, the initiative aims to provide a safer and more sustainable alternative to skin bleaching products.
The 10-day exercise was carried out in various locations of the state gained widespread participation, with samples collected for further analysis. The data obtained will be analyzed to develop skin care solutions that are not only effective but also safe for African skin.
This initiative marks a significant step towards addressing the skin bleaching pandemic in Nigeria, and Bauchi State’s efforts are expected to contribute significantly to the development of science-based skin care solutions.
