In a bid to strengthen local industries and promote skill development among local entrepreneurs in Borno State, the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Borno state coordinating office, embarked on a working visit to the Vocational Enterprise Institute in the State. The visit was part of RMRDC ‘s ongoing efforts to support capacity-building initiatives that align with the Council’s mandate to enhance the utilization of local raw materials for industrial processes.
The Director of the Institute, Engr. Zakariya Ahmed received the RMRDC team led by Mrs. Hajara Suleiman and gave a brief background about the institute. He said the Borno State Vocational Enterprises Institute was established to enable the masses to learn skills in trades and entrepreneurship. He stated that other bodies such as UNICEF, non-governmental organizations, etc had also collaborated with the institute on capacity building for the people.
He stated that the vocational enterprises consist of welding and fabrication, tailoring, building construction, woodwork, electrical installations, solar installations, piping and plumbing, tye and die, automobile, barbing and salon, shoe making, makeup, etc.

Responding, RMRDC representatives discussed potential collaborations, including the possibility of providing technical assistance and resources to enhance the institute’s training programs. They also explore the opportunities for integrating the use of local raw materials into the curriculum, thereby aligning vocational training with the Council’s broader goals of promoting resource-based industrialization.
‘’RMRDC can play a vital role by providing more skills and trades to enable diversification, some of these skills lacking include fish farming, poultry, boosting of agricultural farming which are economical and marketable’’, Mrs. Hajara said.
The institute’s management expressed gratitude and said the visit by RMRDC underscores the importance of vocational training in achieving industrial development.
It will be recalled that due to the insurgency in Borno State, the majority of the people living in most of the LGA and nearby villages fled to Maiduguri, to take refuge and the center has helped them, having lost their trade, businesses, farming and services, and thereby creating more jobless citizens.
