In a groundbreaking move for the Nigerian skincare industry, the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Tropical Derma Research and Training Institute, aimed at launching a comprehensive reform in skin care products and production.
The agreement, signed recently, promises to harness local raw materials and cutting-edge technologies to transform the industry, making it more sustainable, accessible, and globally competitive.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Director-General of RMRDC, Prof. Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso, emphasized the council’s commitment to improving the use of Indigenous natural resources to produce high-quality skincare products.
“Through this partnership, we aim to leverage the incredible potential of Nigeria’s raw materials to develop sustainable and scientifically backed skincare solutions. We are particularly excited about leveraging the AI-powered derma analysis setup developed by the Tropical Derma Research Institute, which will provide skin evaluation and personalized treatment plans, offering users healthy skincare options without resorting to dangerous bleaching products”, he stated.
The DG explained that embarking on the project is transformative, setting benchmarks for quality, safety, and sustainability. He maintained that it will ensure that Nigerians have access to effective and safe skincare products.

The President, Tropical Derma Research and Training Institute, Dr. Edith Gibson, a leading cosmetic manufacturer, and researcher, said they will focus on boosting the research and development of skincare products derived from Nigerian plant extracts, oils, and minerals. She said as outlined in the MOU, the plan is to develop homegrown formulations that cater to the unique needs of African skin types while adhering to international safety and quality standards, observing that the tropical climate of Nigeria presents unique challenges for skincare.
She highlighted the potential to include: reducing production costs, promoting local entrepreneurship, and creating employment opportunities across the country. She said by utilizing locally sourced raw materials, the Nigerian skincare industry is expected to experience a surge in innovation, with products that are tailored to regional climate conditions and skin concerns.
Earlier, the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology signed an MOU with the Tropical Derma Research and Training Institute which led to RMRDC signing her MOU and implementation process, being the sole research institute in raw materials development in Nigeria.
The DG expressed his appreciation to the Hon. Minister, Chief Uche Nnaji for his visionary leadership which was instrumental to the initiative and to the entire Tropical Derma Research and Training Institute for their unwavering dedication and expertise.
He observed that the MOU has set an ambitious timeline, fostering economic growth by creating opportunities for local industries and empowering communities, training local professionals such as beauticians, estheticians, medical professionals, and pharmacists -in tropical dermatology and cosmeceutical science, thereby raising the skill level across the industry and ensuring the safe treatment of consumers.
In addition to product development, the agreement also seeks to raise awareness of the benefits of using locally-made skincare solutions.
The RMRDC’s collaboration is not just a win for the skincare industry but a pivotal step towards positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global natural skincare market.
