The Association of Professional Women Builders of Nigeria (APWBN), Osun State Chapter, recently organized a 3rd Women Conference/annual general meeting at the SOB Hall, Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State with the conference themed “Technological Advancement in Building Construction”. The event brought together stakeholders from the construction industry and research institutions to discuss technological advancements in building construction.

In her welcome address, the State Chairperson of APWBN, Dr. J.O. Adeosun, warmly welcomed participants to the conference, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing in the construction industry. Dr. Adeosun encouraged participants to make the most of the conference, to engage actively in discussions and to ensure they leave with valuable insights and knowledge that can be incorporated into their daily lives.

The National Chairperson of APWBN, Dr. Margaret Shwarka, delivered an inspiring opening remark. She noted that technological advancements have revolutionised the construction industry, transforming the way buildings are designed, constructed and maintained. Dr. Shwarka emphasized that embracing technology is crucial for professionals in the industry to remain competitive and deliver high-quality projects. She encouraged participants to leverage technology to drive innovation and excellence in their work.

Speaking at the event, the Osun State Coordinator of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), advocated for innovation in construction through the utilization of local raw materials. He emphasized that local raw materials can be used to develop sustainable and cost-effective construction solutions, reducing dependence on imported materials. Mr. Adeyemi cited examples of solid minerals that can be used for construction, including laterite, granite, clay and sand. He noted that these materials can be innovatively used in construction, such as using laterite as a sustainable alternative to sand, developing compressed earth blocks using local clay, soil and utilizing granite as an aggregate in concrete production.

In addition, Mr. Adeyemi also highlighted the importance of incorporating technological tools in building construction works. He suggested that drones used for mapping can be valuable in construction projects, potentially improving site monitoring and management. Furthermore, he mentioned that site monitor applications can help reduce material theft, enhancing project efficiency and security.

Mr. Adeyemi also cited the example of Mrs. Bosede Akere Nwachi, a builder and RMRDC partner, who innovatively used red bricks in constructing her training hub. By adopting such innovative methods, Mr. Adeyemi stated that the construction industry can achieve reduced construction costs, increased sustainability, and improved building quality. His presentation underscored the potential for local raw materials and technology to transform the construction sector, making it more efficient, sustainable and cost-effective.

Dr. Taliat Yusuf delivered a thought-provoking presentation on sustainability and resilience in the built environment. He highlighted the importance of creating environmentally friendly and durable buildings that can withstand natural disasters and climate change. Dr. Yusuf emphasized that sustainability is a collective responsibility that requires the collaboration of all stakeholders in the construction industry. He encouraged participants to prioritize sustainability in their projects and adopt environmentally friendly practices.

Dr. Mrs. F.B. Adegoke talked about digitalization of construction building design, focusing on its prospects and challenges. She highlighted the benefits of digital tools in improving design accuracy, reducing errors and enhancing collaboration among stakeholders. Dr. Adegoke noted that digitalization has the potential to transform the construction industry, enabling professionals to deliver projects more efficiently and effectively. She encouraged participants to embrace digital technologies and stay up-to-date with the latest trends and innovations.

The conference provided a platform for stakeholders to share knowledge, expertise, and best practices in the construction industry, emphasizing the importance of technological advancements, innovation and sustainability.
