In a concerted effort to promote gender inclusion in science and technology, the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), in collaboration with the Technology Incubation Centre (TIC) Gusau, has organized the 2025 Girls in ICT and STEM/STEAM Day Summit. The event, held at Al-Uthaimin Secondary School in Gusau, aimed to equip young girls with vital digital and scientific skills while encouraging their active participation in innovation-driven fields.
The RMRDC and TIC team was warmly received by the school’s Principal, who delegated the Vice Principal Administration, also the Chairman of the School’s Competitions, Clubs, and Societies Committee, to coordinate the student engagement. Students were gathered in the science laboratory, where the event officially commenced.
Delivering the keynote address, the Centre Manager of TIC Gusau, Chem. Abdulmalik Musa, MICCON, MCSN, emphasized the critical importance of digital literacy and innovation in the 21st century. He encouraged the students to embrace ICT and technical skills, describing the summit as a gateway to emerging global career opportunities.
Representing the RMRDC Coordinator, Mr. Abdullahi I. B. introduced students to key skill areas showcased during the programme. These included Solar Power System Design, Cosmetics Production, Web Development, and Graphic Design. He urged participants to engage fully in the sessions, noting that the initiative may evolve into a statewide inter-school competition to exhibit the practical skills acquired.
In his closing remarks, the Vice Principal expressed gratitude to RMRDC and TIC Gusau for selecting their school as the host institution. He reaffirmed the school’s commitment to supporting the programme and any subsequent capacity-building efforts.
The summit reflects RMRDC’s mandate to promote innovation, value addition, and human capital development particularly by empowering underrepresented groups such as girls to pursue careers in science and technology.
