In a landmark move poised to reshape the Nigerian skincare industry, the Tropics Derma Research & Training Institute (TDRTI), recognized as Africa’s leading institute for skincare research and innovation, in partnership with the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) is spearheading a 10-day free skin analysis initiative, aimed at transforming skincare solutions for tropical skin types in Borno Stae. The project represents a significant milestone in harnessing Nigeria’s local raw materials and scientific innovation to produce safe, effective, and culturally relevant skincare products for people of African extraction.
The free skin analysis initiative involves the collection of relevant data that will guide skincare solutions for tropical skin types which involves the deployment of an AI-powered derma analysis system. The findings from this data is expected to help TDRTI create products that serve as healthy alternatives to harmful bleaching products while addressing real skin concerns in northern Nigeria.
Speaking on the initiative, TDRTI officials emphasized the project’s broader vision. He stated, “We are committed to creating skincare products that not only nourish and protect our skin but also support local economy and safeguard public health. By utilizing Nigeria’s abundant raw materials, we can develop scientifically validated solutions that reflect our environment and values.”
The exercise saw dozens of individuals trooping to participate in the process which analyse and evaluate key skin health matters such as pigment, elasticity, collagen and moisture content of the skin.
The Borno RMRDC State Coordinator, Mr..Mustapha Shettima, and other RMRDC staff participated in the process. Also, was Engr. Zakariya Ahmed Zakariya of Borno State Vocational Enterprise Institute and some community leaders.
Engr. Zakariya who was delighted, praised the initiative as a much-needed and timely intervention aimed at promoting awareness and advancing the skincare sector. He further emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts, urging both the public and relevant institutions to actively engage with and support the program. According to him, such collective participation is crucial to ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of the initiative throughout the state.

By aligning modern science with local resources, TDRTI is not only advancing skin health but also paving the way for sustainable, community-driven solutions across the continent.
