In a significant move to enhance industrial development in Abia State, the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology is forging a partnership with the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), to drive industrialization and reduce Nigeria’s dependency on imported goods in Abia State. This collaboration was announced during a meeting held in Umuahia, the Abia State capital recently.
During the meeting attended by the Abia State Coordinator of RMRDC Dr. Oji-Nnorom Chioma and her team, the Honourable Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology Hon. David Kalu praised the RMRDC for its proactive initiation of a value addition bill, which aims to ensure that at least 30 percent of all raw materials are processed locally before being exported. He highlighted the importance of this initiative in driving industrialization and reducing Nigeria’s dependency on imported goods.
The discussions between the two institutions focused on several collaboration areas, including research initiatives, investor engagement, and plan for the design of a Raw Materials Display Center, to promote locally sourced raw materials.
The Commissioner welcomed the RMRDC delegation, emphasizing the state’s commitment to supporting innovation-led growth. He pointed out that the partnership is crucial for leveraging research to create sustainable economic opportunities for both Abians and the wider Nigerian populace.

The key topic of discussion was the proposed establishment of the Raw Materials Display Center, envisioned as a platform to highlight local raw materials and their potential industrial applications. This initiative is seen as an essential step towards attracting investors and raising awareness of the state’s rich resource base.
The meeting also addressed the need for RMRDC to secure a permanent office space in Abia State, following a request from the RMRDC Director General made during a prior visit to the state Governor.
The RMRDC Abia State Coordinator Dr. Nnorom was elated at the outcome of the meeting which covered several research and development projects, including the revival of past initiatives like training and workshop programs. She expressed eagerness to broaden research collaborations, particularly focusing on the processing and development of industrial raw materials in the State.
