The Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Sokoto State Coordinating Office, has conducted a technical visit to the Ramin Kwali Gypsum Processing Site in Kalambaina recently, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen the gypsum value chain and promote the sustainable utilization of locally sourced industrial raw materials.
The visit was led by the State Coordinator, Mrs. Nadia Abubakar Bawa, alongside officers of the Sokoto State Coordinating Office.
The RMRDC delegation was received by the President of the Sokoto Women Gypsum Miners’ Association, Hajia Habiba Abubakar and Alhaji Mu’azu Kalambaina, along with executive members of the Sokoto Gypsum Miners’ Association. The hosts provided detailed insights into mining coordination, processing operations, and supply arrangements within the sector.
She stated that Gypsum remains a critical industrial raw material, widely used in cement manufacturing and other construction applications and said that Sokoto State is richly endowed with substantial gypsum deposits that supply major industrial users, including BUA Cement Company, Sokoto. The Ramin Kwali processing site serves as a strategic hub where gypsum mined from various locations within Sokoto State, as well as consignments from Gombe State, are processed for industrial use.

During a guided tour of the facility, RMRDC team observed key processing activities, including manual sorting, sieving, and cleaning of gypsum to meet required industrial standards. Processed gypsum is subjected to batch sampling and laboratory analysis by BUA Cement Company, after which only approved materials are transported to the cement plant.
Findings from the visit revealed a functional manual processing system supported by strong market linkages, but with limited productivity due to equipment and logistics constraints. RMRDC emphasized the need for mechanization, improved transportation, and sustained stakeholder engagement to enhance value addition and productivity across the gypsum value chain.
The visit reaffirms RMRDC’s commitment to supporting artisanal and small-scale miners, strengthening industry linkages, and promoting local content development for sustainable industrial growth in Sokoto State.
