A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Life Savers Ambassadors International, has applauded the Director-General and CEO, Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Prof. Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso, for his bold and visionary stance against the consumption of cow skin, popularly referred to as kpomo, describing it as a major step toward safeguarding Nigeria’s industrial and economic future.
In a letter addressed to Prof. Ike-Muonso, the Organisation expressed their profound appreciation for the DG’s leadership in championing the campaign, noting that the issue goes beyond public health to touch on economic sovereignty and industrial development.
The NGO noted that, Nigeria is endowed with some of the finest hides and skins globally, which, if properly harnessed, could significantly boost the nation’s leather value chain. According to them, redirecting hides and skins from consumption to industrial processing has the potential to revitalize critical sectors of the economy such as footwear, upholstery, and fashion, while creating thousands of jobs and generating much-needed foreign exchange earnings for the country.
They further disclosed in the letter that for years the organisation has advocated against the consumption of kpomo, and in the process confronted entrenched interests; however, seeing RMRDC take the lead is a breath of fresh air and a victory for Nigeria’s industrial future.
They also indicated that based on years of grassroots engagement, Life Savers Ambassadors International has developed a comprehensive work plan aimed at supporting the campaign, pointing out that the proposal covers public sensitisation to shift cultural perceptions around kpomo consumption, promotion of affordable and nutritious alternative protein sources, and value-chain mapping to connect local skin collectors with industrial off-takers.
They expressed eagerness to collaborate with RMRDC to ensure the success of the initiative, adding that it is ready to present its work plan and explore areas of partnership that align with the Council’s mandate.
In his response, the DG RMRDC expressed his profound appreciation for the recommendation. He said that the partnership was a welcome development as the Council is not relenting, and is willing to collaborate with any organization whose objective aligns with that of the Council to promote development in the nation’s raw materials sector.
Prof. Ike-Muonso describe the advocacy to redirect the usage of kpomo as a strategic move to strengthen Nigeria’s raw materials base, stimulate industrial growth, and position the country for greater competitiveness in the global market.
