In a strategic move to tackle the growing menace of plastic pollution in Nigeria, the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) has initiated a collaborative effort with Eco Waste to Wealth Recycling, a leading plastic recycling firm based in Edo State.
A delegation from the RMRDC, led by the Acting State Coordinator, Mr. Otoikhila Emmanuel, visited the Eco Waste facility located at the Edo Production Centre, KM 6 Sapele Road, Benin City. The visit was part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable environmental practices and industrial collaboration in the state.
During the visit, Eco Waste Managing Director, Dr. Victor Ehimiaghe, engaged the RMRDC team in an extensive discussion on practical solutions to curb plastic waste. He outlined the pressing challenges faced by the recycling sector, including limited access to indigenous and automated recycling technologies. Dr. Ehimiaghe appealed to RMRDC for technical support and assistance in establishing PET bottle collection centers across key locations in Edo State.

“You may need to know that Nigeria ranks as a major global plastic polluter, second in the world. The country generates millions of tons of plastic waste annually, with only a negligible amount being recycled,” Dr. Ehimiaghe noted. “This pollution is evident in our cities, waterways, and marine environments, contributing to serious environmental and public health risks.”
He identified single-use plastics, water sachets, shopping bags, and takeaway food packs as major contributors to plastic waste in Nigeria. He further emphasized that poor waste management practices and public indifference exacerbate the situation.
Referencing global data, he pointed out that only 9% of all plastics ever produced are recycled, while plastics account for 73% of beach litter worldwide. In response to these alarming statistics, several countries have already outlawed single-use plastics.
The RMRDC reiterated its commitment to supporting sustainable recycling initiatives and revealed ongoing discussions with the Edo State Waste Management Board to establish PET bottle collection points in strategic areas across Benin City.
In addition, the Council is planning regular advocacy campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution. These campaigns will target high-traffic areas such as markets, motor parks, and major streets, aiming to promote environmentally responsible behaviour among residents.
This partnership between RMRDC and Eco Waste reflects a growing recognition of the urgent need to address plastic pollution through innovative, community-based, and government-supported interventions.
