In a strategic move aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and aligning research efforts with national development goals, the Oyo State Coordinating Office of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) held a one-day internal capacity-building workshop on Tuesday, July 7, 2025.
The training, held in Ibadan, was spearheaded by the recently appointed State Coordinator, Mr. Olukayode Adeogun, an Assistant Director at the Council. The initiative focused on equipping staff with essential skills in project management and strategic communication—two critical areas identified as key to RMRDC’s repositioning in Nigeria’s drive for industrial development through raw materials research.
According to Mr. Adeogun, the training reflects a shift from traditional research silos toward a more integrated, impact-oriented model. “The success of our mandates no longer depends solely on technical research; rather, on how effectively we plan, execute, and communicate our footprint to Nigerians and the international development community,” he stated during the opening address.
The workshop brought together representatives from all departments of the State Office. Participants explored modules on structured project management, including setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) targets, efficient resource allocation, proactive risk tracking, and clearly defined departmental roles to ensure accountability.
Strategic communication was emphasized as an essential tool—not merely public relations, but a mechanism for stakeholder engagement, grassroots mobilization, and public trust-building. The Council’s recent success with its AI-driven Skin Health Analysis Programme was used as a case study, highlighting how clear, evidence-based public engagement contributed to building the nation’s largest skin health database and drawing over 650 participants.
The training also tackled workplace ethics, emphasizing the importance of punctuality, interdepartmental respect, accountability, and professionalism. These, Mr. Adeogun said, are just as crucial as technical expertise in achieving institutional excellence.
“The Council must evolve into a results-driven innovation hub that not only develops research outputs but delivers them in a way that creates socio-economic impact,” he added.
Flagship initiatives such as barite localization, indigenous skincare research, and the Saro Smart agro-industrial cluster were cited as examples of how effective project execution can support national goals and unlock local industrial potential.
The day-long exercise was described by participants as timely and transformative. It marked a renewed commitment by the RMRDC Oyo State Office to align its operations with broader national development strategies through improved staff capacity, better communication, and disciplined project execution.
“To achieve the Nigeria we desire through raw materials research,” Mr. Adeogun concluded, “we need not only die-hard technical thinking but strategic action, purposeful communication, and ethical practice.”
With this training, RMRDC Oyo reaffirms its position as a catalyst for sustainable development through the optimal use of Nigeria’s vast raw materials resources.
