In a strategic move to bolster staff productivity and institutional efficiency, the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Kogi State Office, recently organized a one-day capacity-building training on Performance Management Systems (PMS) for its staff.
The training, held recently, is part of the Council’s ongoing efforts to enhance workforce capabilities and align employee performance with organizational goals. It was facilitated by Dr. Kama Onuogbu, Assistant Director at the RMRDC Training School, headquartered in Abuja.
The initiative underscores RMRDC’s broader commitment to developing a results-driven workforce across its offices nationwide. According to the organizers, the training aimed to familiarize staff with the key components of the PMS framework, including goal setting, performance appraisal techniques, feedback mechanisms, and compliance with established evaluation policies.
In his opening remarks, the State Coordinator of the RMRDC Kogi State Office, Dr. Peter Adegede highlighted the critical role of performance management in driving accountability, operational efficiency, and strategic alignment. He emphasized that understanding and implementing the PMS framework is essential for the Council to fulfill its mandate of promoting the development and optimal utilization of Nigeria’s raw materials.

Dr. Onuogbu, during the technical session, delved into the practical aspects of performance management, stressing the need for continuous monitoring and improvement beyond the traditional annual appraisal system. The session covered critical topics such as setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals, identifying and addressing performance gaps, and fostering a culture of feedback and recognition.
“The performance management process should not be reduced to a mere formality or once-a-year checklist,” Dr. Onuogbu noted. “It is a strategic tool for building a culture of excellence, where continuous development, open communication, trust, and empathy are embedded in the workplace.”
The interactive training, which had 33 staff members in attendance, featured hands-on exercises, group discussions, and case studies to reinforce learning. Participants were trained to apply the PMS tools in their daily responsibilities and were encouraged to adopt a proactive approach to performance planning and evaluation.
Dr. Onuogbu commended the active participation and enthusiasm of the staff, encouraging them to consistently apply the principles learned. He stressed that by embracing PMS, the Kogi office would not only improve internal processes but also make more meaningful contributions to national industrial development.
The training concluded with a renewed commitment from staff to uphold the values of continuous learning, transparency, and accountability in their roles. It is expected that the enhanced understanding of performance management principles will significantly improve individual and collective outputs, streamline operations, and strengthen the Council’s overall impact.
With initiatives like this, RMRDC continues to demonstrate its dedication to institutional excellence and the professional development of its workforce.
