In a bid to address the widespread issue of skin bleaching and damage especially common in tropical regions like Nigeria, the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), in collaboration with the Tropical Derma Research and Training Institute (TDRTI), has embarked on a nationwide initiative to promote healthier skincare practices using Nigeria’s local raw materials.
The initiative featured a 10-day free skin analysis conducted across all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory. This exercise, which ran from Tuesday, May 13 to Tuesday, May 27, 2025, aimed to gather important data that will guide the development of improved skincare products that suit the unique needs of tropical skin, especially Nigerian skin; using indigenous raw materials.
Plateau State actively participated in the programme, with activities commencing at the RMRDC State Coordinating Office in Dogon Dutse, Jos, on May 13. The team visited various locations including Terminus market areas, schools, and other public spaces daily throughout the 10-day period to conduct the skin analysis.
This initiative shows the efforts of both RMRDC and TDRTI in promoting the use of local raw materials in developing sustainable solutions for skin health, while also discouraging the harmful practice of skin bleaching.
