The Africa Raw Materials Summit came to a successful close on Thursday, 22nd May 2025, with an engaging and enlightening tour of participants to the Research and Demonstration Plant Complex of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) in Abuja. The visit offered a firsthand look at the Council’s technological innovations and capacity-building efforts in raw materials processing.

Leading the delegation was the Overseeing Director, Research and Development Plants Complex (RDPC), Mr. Abdulhamid Ali Dahuwa and Deputy Director, Pilot Plant and Process Equipment Division (PPPED), Mr. Sirajo Musa.

During the tour.

The RDPC showcased an impressive array of locally fabricated processing equipment and various other prototype machines designed to support value addition and industrial development using Nigeria’s abundant natural resources. The display of technologies to this high-level audience was not only an opportunity to highlight Nigeria’s scientific and technical achievements but also a vital step toward attracting partnerships, funding, and regulatory support for scaling up RDPC-developed products.

Mr. Sirajo addressed the delegates and personally guided them through various operational units within the facility. The tour included visits to the sorbitol pilot plant, Soap Noodles Pilot Plant, Pharmaceutical Grade Talc Pilot Plant, Phytomedicine Pilot Plant, Plasters of Paris (POP) Pilot Plant, Artemisia Pilot Plant and so on.

Participants were visibly impressed by the scale and sophistication of the equipment on display. Many expressed amazement at the Council’s capacity to engineer such cutting-edge technology locally, describing the initiative as a bold step toward self-reliance in raw materials processing.

Touring one of the Pilot Plants.

Mrs. Olusola Olaniyi, Advisory Council member, International Women in Mining Nigeria and a member of the Association of Women in Africa, stated that the demonstration plant is a good initiative that will help in the economic development of Nigeria. She suggested that centres like that be replicated in all the states in Nigeria.

“The Summit has given me much understanding that a lot of things are possible. I am glad to see the Demonstration Plant, there is hope for Nigeria. I will advise that RMRDC work with youths and women, particularly so that there would be sustainable development with the massive display of equipment here, she opined.

“I am thoroughly impressed,” said one of the participants. “This plant is not just a display of machines—it’s a statement of intent. RMRDC is driving the future of industrialization in Africa.”

Another delegate noted, “This project is a game-changer. The Council’s commitment to research and development will surely redefine Nigeria’s raw materials landscape and unlock new economic opportunities.”

Many more participants applauded and commended RMRDC for its visionary leadership and tangible contribution to national development. The visit underscored the Council’s pivotal role in promoting industrial growth through the transformation of raw materials into viable products for local and international markets.

The tour marked a fitting conclusion to the summit, reinforcing the central theme of the event—”Shaping the Future of Africa’s Resource Landscape“—and highlighting RMRDC’s role as a key driver in Africa’s journey toward industrial self-reliance.
