As part of a major initiative to advance evidence-based skincare solutions using local raw materials, the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), in partnership with Tropics Derma Research and Training Institute (TDRTI), has launched a free 10-day skin analysis exercise. The program commenced on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at the Council’s Headquarters Clinic in Abuja.
The exercise will be extended to some parts of the Federal Capital Territory like Jabi, Lugbe, Kwali, churches, schools, and marketplaces. The skin analysis for FCT is being covered by a team from RMRDC FCT Coordinating Office and another team from the RMRDC Headquarters drawn from the Pharmaceutical Division.
This initiative follows the recently concluded two-day intensive training for 36 state-appointed skin analysis representatives. Each representative is tasked with conducting a minimum of 500 skin assessments within the 10-day period, contributing to the creation of Nigeria’s first national skin profile database.
Speaking on the initiative, Deputy Director of the Pharmaceutical Division, Engr. Uche Maduegbunam, explained the rationale behind starting the exercise at the RMRDC Headquarters. “We wanted to begin with our internal staff to ensure the system runs smoothly before expanding outreach to wider communities,” she said. She also led the in-house training of a team from the Pharmaceutical Division who are now playing active roles in the Skin Analysis process. “Once I trained my team on how to use the AI-powered device, they were eager to get involved. It’s a quick, painless process, no needles, just smart technology,” she added.
The on-site analysis, conducted by trained staff including Hassan Muhammad and Rukayya Abdullatif, has been well-received. Both expressed appreciation for the opportunity to participate, noting that the experience has enhanced their skills and professional growth.
The five-minute procedure focuses on the T and U zones of the face, offering instant results in the form of detailed tables and graphs. Participants also receive personalized skincare advice and have the opportunity to speak directly with skin experts, helping them understand their skin types and concerns more thoroughly.
The data gathered will be centralized by TDRTI for analysis and research, forming the foundation for the development of effective, safe, and affordable skincare products tailored specifically to Nigeria’s diverse skin types. This initiative aligns with RMRDC’s core mandate of promoting the development and utilization of Nigeria’s industrial raw materials.
As the campaign expands across Abuja and the nation, the collaboration between RMRDC and TDRTI represents a transformative step toward healthier skin for Nigerians and a stronger local skincare industry rooted in indigenous science and innovation.
