The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has commended the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) for organizing a groundbreaking program presentation and dialogue event.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of platforms that foster collaboration between policymakers, researchers, and private sector stakeholders. “I would like to commend your efforts to promote dialogue on improved utilization of Nigeria’s raw materials for sustainable industrial growth. Nigeria would benefit by processing its wealth of raw materials locally and exporting finished goods. This is part of our re-globalization drive at the WTO and will help Nigeria’s further integration into global supply chains and facilitate sustainable development”, she stated.
The event, held in Abuja, focused on enhancing Nigeria’s industrial development and global trade competitiveness through local raw materials sourcing and strategic partnerships.
The dialogue event featured presentations on key programs developed by the RMRDC to support industries in accessing locally sourced materials. Panel discussions also explored ways to reduce dependency on imports, strengthen Nigeria’s supply chain resilience, and position the country as a hub for regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

RMRDC Director-General, Prof. Nnanyelugo M. Ike-Muonso emphasized the council’s commitment to fostering industrial development. He informed that the council’s mission is to support the private sector with the tools and knowledge necessary to leverage local resources for sustainable production. He observed that the maiden event represents an essential step in the strategy to improve Nigeria’s industrial outlook.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala expressed optimism and looks forward to WTO collaborating with RMRDC.
